Questions and answers
How do I wake Awedly?
Say “Hey Awedly”, or just “Awedly”, and wait for the two rising notes. They mean Awedly is listening. You can also tap anywhere on the screen.
- Say it at your normal pace, a little closer to the phone if the room is noisy.
- Say the request right after it: “Hey Awedly, read John 3”. If you say only “Hey Awedly”, Awedly answers (“Mm-hm?”) and you have a few seconds to ask.
- While Awedly is reading, or just after it answers, you can talk with no wake word.
- For a while, the old name “Hey Awdee” still works too.
What if it does not hear me?
- Wait for the rising notes before you speak. One low, soft note means Awedly heard nothing.
- If the screen is nearly dark, Awedly is asleep. Tap the screen to wake it. Awedly sleeps when the screen locks or you leave the app.
- Check that the microphone is allowed: open the iPhone Settings app, choose Awedly, and switch on Microphone. If the microphone is off, Awedly shows an “Open Settings” button.
- Look for the small warning sign on the screen. It gives the reason Awedly cannot listen.
- Try a quieter spot, or move the phone closer. If a television is on, teaching Awedly your voice helps (see below).
- Talking is not working at the moment? You can type instead.
How do I read quietly, with no voice?
Say “I’ll read myself”, “let me read” or “quiet” while Awedly is reading. The voice stops and the page stays where it was. To open a chapter without any speech, tap the title at the top (for example “John 3:25”), pick a book and a chapter, and it opens quietly. Tap a verse to mark it. On a quiet page, a tap never starts the voice.
How do I type instead of talking?
Tap the magnifying glass at the top right, next to the gear. A box opens with the keyboard ready (dictation works too). Type a passage such as “John 3:16” or a question such as “where did I leave off”, then tap Go. Typed requests are quiet: the passage opens on the screen and Awedly says nothing, unless you tap “Read aloud” on the answer card. Typing never uses the microphone.
Which languages does it understand?
Awedly listens for and speaks English. You can already type in Hindi or Spanish (in Settings, Voice and reading, Language): book names, numbers and the usual controls are understood. For now, replies are still spoken in English. Speech in Hindi and Spanish is coming.
What leaves my phone, and how do I turn it off?
Your voice never leaves the phone. Only the words of a request that Awedly cannot work out on its own may be sent as text, through our relay, to an AI model so it can understand what you meant. To turn that off, open Settings, then Privacy and data, and switch off “Smarter understanding (uses the internet)”. The full details are in the privacy policy.
How do I teach Awedly my voice?
It is optional. Say “learn my voice”, or open Settings and choose Listening, and follow the prompts. Then only your voice can interrupt a reading with a request, which helps if a television or other people are nearby. Awedly keeps a small voiceprint on the phone, not a recording. You can re-record, test or forget it in Settings, under Listening. “Hey Awedly” and a plain “stop” work for everyone, taught or not.
Tips for VoiceOver
- The cloud in the middle is one button that says what Awedly is doing. Double tap it to talk.
- Swipe up or down on it to hear the actions Pause (or Resume) and Stop.
- Awedly pauses its own voice while VoiceOver is speaking, and carries on a moment after.
- In a chapter, each verse is its own item. Its actions include “Read from here”, and the chapter has “Next chapter” and “Previous chapter” actions.
- To go back, use the escape gesture (two-finger scrub) or the back button at the top left.
Is Awedly on the App Store?
Not yet. You can ask to be told when TestFlight opens: use the form on the home page.
