Privacy policy
The short version
- Awedly listens and speaks on your phone. Your voice is not recorded or sent anywhere.
- Only the words of a request may be sent, as text, to an AI model so it can work out what you meant. You can turn that off.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics, no account.
- If you join the waitlist on this website, we keep your email address to tell you when TestFlight opens, and you can remove it at any time.
What stays on your phone
- Listening. Speech recognition and the wake word “Hey Awedly” run on the phone. Your audio is not sent anywhere.
- Speaking. The voice that reads to you runs on the phone too.
- Your place and settings. Where you stopped, your settings and the Bibles you have saved for offline use are stored on the phone only.
- Your voiceprint, if you teach it. If you choose “Teach Awedly your voice”, Awedly keeps a small voiceprint, which is a short list of numbers describing how your voice sounds. It is not a recording. It stays on the phone, it lets Awedly tell your voice from a television or a visitor, and you can forget it in Settings at any time.
What is sent, and to whom
The words of a request, to understand it
When you say something to Awedly after its name or a tap, and Awedly cannot work it out on its own, the words of that request are sent as text through our relay (a small service we run) to an AI model, Anthropic’s Claude, reached through OpenRouter. The model only chooses what Awedly should do, for example “read John 3 more slowly”. What is sent:
- the words of the request (typed requests too);
- a little context so the answer makes sense: where you are in the Bible, whether a reading is paused, the question Awedly just asked, your last three requests, and your Bible version and voice.
Your voice is never sent, only the words. Simple commands such as “stop”, “pause”, “louder” and yes or no are handled on the phone and are not sent. Very long requests (over 60 words) are not sent. Our relay does not keep what was said and is set not to log it. The phone does not keep a record of your words either.
You can turn this off. In Settings, under Privacy and data, switch off “Smarter understanding (uses the internet)”. Awedly then understands only what it can work out on its own. With no internet connection it does the same by itself.
Bible text
The Bible text comes from the YouVersion Platform. The app asks our relay, and our relay asks YouVersion on its behalf, so YouVersion sees the request coming from our relay and not from your phone. The request names the Bible version and the chapter. To limit abuse, the relay counts requests per anonymous device ID, a random code the app makes for itself. It is not tied to your name, your email address or any account. Chapters you have read are saved on the phone so they need not be fetched again.
What we do not collect
- No advertising and no advertising identifiers.
- No tracking across apps or websites.
- No analytics or usage statistics, in the app or on this website.
- No account, and no name, phone number or location.
- We do not sell personal information.
Test builds and session recordings
Test builds of Awedly, used by the helpers who are trying it, record each session on the phone so problems can be found: the microphone audio and what Awedly did. The last ten sessions are kept on that phone and nothing is sent anywhere. A helper may choose to share a session with us by hand, for example by email. The App Store version of Awedly does not make these recordings.
The TestFlight waitlist (this website)
If you fill in the form on our home page, we store:
- your email address;
- the time you signed up;
- a note that you agreed to be emailed once about TestFlight;
- a random code that lets you remove yourself.
Why. Only to send you one email when TestFlight opens. We do not send you marketing, we do not share the list and we do not use it for anything else. No email is sent when you sign up.
How long. We keep your address until we have sent that email, or until you remove it, whichever is first. Then we delete the list.
How to remove yourself. After you sign up, the confirmation page shows a personal unsubscribe link; save it. Opening the link deletes your entry at once. You can also write to hello@awedly.com from the address you signed up with and we will delete it.
The list is stored with Cloudflare, which runs this website. To slow down spam, we also keep a short-lived count of sign-ups per network address for about an hour. The address is scrambled first (hashed) and the count is deleted after the hour.
This website
The website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other companies: no analytics, no fonts, no embedded video. It remembers your choice of Sketch or Classic look in your own browser, and that choice never leaves your device. Cloudflare delivers the pages and, like any web host, handles your connection (including your IP address) to do so.
Children
Awedly and this website are not aimed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us an email address, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy we will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. If a change affects what is collected or sent, we will say so on our home page too.
